Welcome to the Colorado backcountry

The vast acreage of wilderness and backcountry beauty in Colorado make it one of the more popular locations for camping, backpacking, and day-hiking.

In addition to a eight National Parks and Monuments, Colorado boasts an equal number of Wilderness Areas, millions of acres of National Forest and BLM land, and over three dozen state parks.

From mountains to deserts, and grasslands to canyons, one could spend a lifetime hiking the trails of Colorado and not cover all of them.

Camping Equipment

There are many outdoor stores that sell camping gear and equipment.  General sporting goods stores will often carry camping supplies too.  The thing to remember when buying something is that you're going to be using it miles from anywhere, brought it because you needed it, and probably didn't have a backup due to space or weight considerations in your pack.  So your gear has to be reliable.  The off-brand camping equipment you find at Wal-Mart may seem like a bargain, but you get what you pay for.

I like to buy name-brand gear at really good prices.  One of my favorite stores is Campmor.  I recently learned about Camping-Gear.us, but have yet to buy anything from them.  I've been a member of REI for thirty five years.  They may not have the best prices, but their quality is first rate, even on their REI-branded merchandise.  To find good deals there, I check out their sales and their outlet.
